The world that we live in today is filled with innumerable possibilities and chances for anyone that is willing to take them. People can literally be anything that they want to be and can aspire to reach any height that they could dream of. While it may seem a little fantastic, the fact of the matter is that a person is only hampered in their success by their own limitations. These limitations are often rooted in what the person is expecting to achieve and to reach success many experts agree that one needs to practice smart goal setting if you want to achieve success.
While it may be simple for the experts to talk about smart goal setting, it can sometimes be confusing to people who do not know what it entails. Smart goal setting is more than just about having goals that make sense. It also entails having goals that are realistic, attainable and measurable. This does not mean that you should ignore goals that are, at first glance, unrealistic or unattainable. All this means is that you should focus on those first and the move on to the others.
This is where the concept of long-term and short-term goals comes into the picture. Long-term goals are those goals that you would like to achieve at some point in the future. Some consultants say it is a good idea to try to place a realistic date on these goals while other say that they date of their realization should remain purposefully mercurial. These long-term goals are those that you are striving towards but that are, for the moment, practically unattainable. The short-term goals are those goals that will help you reach the eventual long-term goals at the end of the line. With smart goal setting your short-term goals can become the stepping-stones to reach the long-term goal at the other end. When speaking of smart goal setting we, mentioned that goals need to be realistic and attainable. As a rather broad example, it is unrealistic and certainly not attainable for a foreign immigrant to become president of the United States since the law clearly states it is not possible. Whenever a goal is reached (usually a short-term one) you are motivated by success to keep seeking the others. Unrealistic goals, however, will only drain motivation making it harder for you to reach towards success. For the same reason goals need to be measurable. This means that there should be some way for you to track your progress in reaching the goal that you want. Whether this tracking is concrete or more mercurial is not important, as long as you have some way of letting yourself know that you are making headway to your goals. Very few things are impossible if you put your mind to it. Smart goal setting can help you reach almost any goal that you can think of. Do not be mired down by failures. Remember that Thomas Edison said that you can never fail; you only find the many different ways that do not work!
